Therapy with Beck

Understand what's going on. Then change it.

Most people reach out when the way they've always handled things stops working: a loss, a marriage under strain, anger that's costing them, a heaviness they can't shake. I'm Beck Sloman, a psychotherapist in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood and online across Massachusetts.

Who I work with

Men

Many of the men I see are capable and successful, the person everyone else leans on. They usually come in at a turning point: a divorce, a career at a crossroads, or success that no longer feels like enough.

And they've been carrying it alone, with no one to talk to who isn't part of their family, their work, or their friend group. That's what I'm here for. I'm outside your daily life, so I can hear all of it without judgment and look at it with fresh eyes.

Couples

When the marriage is what's under strain. Couples who keep having the same fight, who've drifted apart, or who are trying to repair something. I don't take sides. I help you both say what's true, really hear each other, and turn back toward each other. I plan couples work around 10 to 12 sessions, which keeps us focused. Some couples keep going after that, and some don't need to.

Individuals

I also work with adults of any gender. Whatever brings you in, whether it's relationships, sex, anxiety, depression, grief, or a big transition, you set the agenda. My job is to listen closely and help you get clear on what you want.

How I work

I try to get as smart about your life as I can, as quickly as I can. Early on, that means asking good questions and then listening a lot. I look at the past to understand the present. Patterns usually start somewhere, and seeing where makes them easier to change.

This is a partnership. You know your life better than anyone. I have no stake in how things turn out, except that they get better for you. What you say here stays private, and nothing is off limits. Whatever you want, do, or wonder about, we can talk about it openly and without shame.

A lot of people who come in are stuck in a loop they can't quite see: a story they tell themselves that doesn't hold up, a reaction that makes things worse, and a result that seems to prove the story right. The work is noticing those stories, owning your part, and doing something different, even when it's hard. Then I'll hold you to it.

I'm direct. I'll tell you what I notice. I also know that no one fits neatly into a theory. That keeps me curious, and it's a big part of why I love this work.

About me

Before I became a therapist, I worked in New York as a human strategist at creative firms. I studied how people live, what they care about, what they feel, and why they do what they do, and turned that into insights for new consumer products and ad campaigns.

That work still shapes how I listen. It also means I know the world a lot of my clients come from, where you're expected to perform and have everything handled.

When I'm not working, I'm usually on a tennis court or out walking Princess, my pit bull.
